Clarion and MySQL 28-Mar-2002 -- Susan Pichotta There's a new product that will allow your Clarion programs to connect to and use MySQL servers directly, without ODBC or Claron file drivers. (MySQL is available to websites with most internet hosting plans.) Templates are provided that work with ABC and Legacy template chains. And hand coders can send any valid SQL command to the server without having any predefined FILEs. For more information, visit the Tool Wares Software website. This week at ClarionMag 28-Mar-2002 -- Susan Pichotta Dave Harms has announced a delay in publishing Clarion Magazine, due to the arrival of his baby girl, Sophia Elizabeth Nicole Harms. Dave reports Mom and baby are doing well. Congratulations, Dave & Bonny! In the meantime, if you haven't caught the two-part article by Jay Guengerich on creating a SCADA interface with Clarion, now would be a good time. Read more about it in ClarionMagazine. Joel on Software 20-Mar-2002 -- Susan Pichotta If you haven't heard about this website yet, you should check it out. Joel is a programmer who has worked for Microsoft (and other companies), and now has his own software company in New York City. He's also a very readable and prolific writer, with good ideas and strong opinions about software. You may not always agree with him, but sometimes you will, and he does give you plenty of food for thought. Joel's latest page contains information about books he recommends. Most are about programming and management, but there are a few that add color. For more information, see the Joel on Software website. Take a look! And about the Professional Wizards... 19-Feb-2002 -- Arnór Baldvinsson Work on the Professional Wizards is progressing well and some components have been through alpha testing. New goodies in the Icetips Standard Wizards 13-Feb-2002 -- Susan Pichotta While Arnór has been working on the Icetips Professional Wizards, I began using his Standard Wizards to help me write a new app. At this point, I don't know whether Arnór would say it's good or bad to have your wife use your products.
But now there are some neat new usability features in the Icetips Standard Wizards (and they'll be included
in the Professional Wizards, too). Arnór will be releasing a new build of the Icetips Standard
Wizards soon, probably early next week. The upgrade will be free to all current customers. :)Previewer en español 08-Feb-2002 -- Arnór Baldvinsson We now have a Theme file in Spanish for Icetips Previewer 1.001, courtesy of Gopac Soluciones Integrales in Mexico. They have kindly allowed us to put the Theme up for download. Note that Theme files are only used when Creating a new Previwer procedure and will not affect existing previewers at all. Winword Previewer & Icetips Previewer 06-Feb-2002 -- Arnór Baldvinsson One of our customers has successfully added a call to the Winword Previewer from FominTools in our Icetips Previewer. Read more about it Previewer Compatibility 06-Feb-2002 -- Arnór Baldvinsson We have just discovered a rather nasty compatibility issue in our Icetips Previewer Extension template with Clarion 5B, Legacy. It results in the Icetips Previewer embeds not showing up at all and code put into the "Before Print Preview" embed is generated inside the code structure that the Previewer Extension template generates. Clarion 4 and Clarion 5.5 do not have this problem.
After fixing this for Clarion 5, we discovered that the Clarion 5 Extension template breaks completely down in both Clarion 4 and Clarion 5.5 Legacy, so we were forced to provide a version dependent template file in the Installation from now on. We have a new installation available for download with this fix, as well as with the smooth page scrolling as standard behaviour generated by the wizard. Image Viewer in Clarion only $99 -- with source! 30-Jan-2002 -- Susan Pichotta Now, you can include an image viewer procedure in your app that will let you scroll through images in a folder, displaying each one, even printing them, if you like. Want thumbnails instead, or some other change? Since you have the source, you can modify it any way you like.
What is this new image viewer? It's the Icetips Previewer, with a few modifications. See the downloads page for a demo showing the image previewer features and a white paper (available Jan. 31) with detailed instructions on how to turn the Icetips Report Previewer into an image viewer. Also, Arnór's image viewer app will made available to Previewer customers on request. Available through January 31 for the sale price of $99. Check out the money-saving Icetips Combos, too, on sale through January 31 (save $99-$122). Icetips Report Previewer Through Jan 31, only $99.00 23-Jan-2002 -- Arnór Baldvinsson Icetips has released a new product, the Icetips Previewer.

The Professional is coming! 3-Jan-2002 -- Arnór Baldvinsson The Icetips Professional Wizards, that have been on the drawing board and in development since early November, will hopefully enter beta testing about mid January. The Professional Wizards will work with a number of other third party products, allowing developers to create procedures and have the wizards populate the extension templates of their choice. The Professional Wizards will also interface with the Icetips Reporter and contain a lot of additional options. We have received some feedback from Clarion developers and certainly welcome any and all ideas for improvement and new options. New Icetips Product 18-Jan-2002 -- Arnór Baldvinsson We are wrapping up a new product that will be released after the weekend. As we are working on the Professional Wizards too we are taking a bit longer to get this one done. It will be released Monday, January 21st, so stay tuned! Watching for a New Wizard 16-Jan-2002 -- Susan Pichotta Keep on the watch for a brand-new Wizard, coming in the next day or two from Icetips. Arnór, the Wizards author, is one of those guys who likes to have two projects going at the same time. So in between working on the Professional Wizards, he's been playing with a new Wizard concept. It's a hot little Wizard, we think you'll love it! Wait 'til you see... watch for it tomorrow, or Friday, at the latest. He'll add to the list every now and then... here it is for now. Read more about it |

The Clarion Advisor: LINK Tricks 13-Feb-2002 -- Dave Harms Sometimes you want to tell Clarion to include a particular library in the link process. In the template language you can do this with the #PROJECT statement. But what if you’re just using straight Clarion code? Mark Goldberg shows a quick and easy way to include LIBs and other resources in your app. Read about this and more in ClarionMagazine. SysDTP 1.1 released 13-Feb-2002 -- Susan Pichotta SolidSoftware recently released version 1.1 of SysDTP. The product has been improved and a few bugs are out. This update is free for all registered users. A new demo is also available. SysDTP is a wrapper class for the "Date and time picker" common control, allowing you to use these neat little drop-down calendars in your Clarion applications. See Solid Software for details. XP Incompatible Compatibility... 08-Feb-2002 -- Arnór Baldvinsson Jim Kane reported on comp.lang.clarion on February 6, that he had run into problems when compatiblity mode is set on a program running under XP. This can cause havoc as some API calls and the registry are different in NT based OS, like NT, W2K and XP. For example GetVersionEX api call returns win98 in a program running under XP in Win98 compatiblity mode. Read Jim's messages on comp.lang.clarion in a thread called "Compatibility Mode Gottcha" started on February 6, 2002. Using KEYSTATE for Backdoors and Other Tricks 06-Feb-2002 -- Dave Harms The Clarion KEYSTATE function returns the status of the "shift type" keys (Shift, Ctrl, Alt), the lock keys (Caps Lock, Num Lock, Scroll Lock), and the Insert key (overwrite or insert). It might sound like KEYSTATE isn’t good for much more than displaying information on the status bar, but in fact this function is a great tool for detecting unusual keystroke combinations (including when the numeric keypad has been used), which you can use to implement hidden features in your applications. Read about this and more in ClarionMagazine. SetupBuilder™ 4.01 released 06-Feb-2002 -- Susan Pichotta Linder Software shipped SetupBuilder 4.01 on Monday, Feb. 4. If so, you have the "required field lookup blues." Here's Dr. Parker's prescription. Read all about it in ClarionMagazine. Free Thumbnail program! 30-Jan-2002 -- Arnor Baldvinsson We have found a very kewl little thumnail program on the web. Works great with JPG files as well as bmp, but doesn't seem to work with GIF files. Can be run from the command line and used as a transparent utility to create nice thumbnails. The thumnails in the screenshot to the left were generated with this little program, which is called Easy Thumbnails 1.6 Icetips Report Previewer New features added 30-Jan-2002 -- Susan Pichotta New features have been added (one way or another) to the Icetips Previewer since it's initial release. Some of the features will be added soon to the Previewer Wizard & template, and all are (or will be) available as whitepapers at the Icetips downloads page: Using C++ with Clarion 23-Jan-2002 -- Susan Pichotta ClarionMagazine has a new two-part article telling how to use C++ with Clarion. These articles demonstrate how Clarion interfaces and C++ abstract base classes can be freely interchanged between Clarion, TopSpeed C++ and Microsoft Visual C++. Not only does this provide a convenient conduit for mixed language development, it also allows objects to be shared across languages. More on Windows XP 18-Jan-2002 -- Arnór Baldvinsson Jim Gambon reported yesterday in the c55.bugs newsgroup that the reason for slowing down of programs running under XP that use Clarion files, may be traced to the new System Restore functions in XP Professional. You will hate this, but it seems that the smart folks at Microsoft put K01, K02, and K03 on the System Restore File list. Read Microsoft article about it. This means, of course, every time a key in your app is touched/changed the OS makes a snapshot of it. Interbase has the same problem with their GDB file extension. They have an article that may help you out. Read Borland article about Interbase solution. Note that this only applies to XP Professional and .CLW files are also on Microsoft's list! INN Bio: Jesus Moreno 27-Mar-2002 -- Susan Pichotta This week, the Icetips News Network is pleased to present a bio of one
of the more prolific third-party providers. We mean he's prolific in providing products... although he
and his wife have been prolific in having children, too (great picture of the kids!). Born in Spain, now
living in Southern California, we think the Force is with him. Read more about it INN Bio: Michael Brooks 20-Mar-2002 -- Susan Pichotta This week's featured Clarion developer is another interesting guy.
He used to be a structural engineer, but now
he's a tried-and-true Clarionite. And…Think "ClarioNET". (He's the author. If you're not familiar with ClarioNET, it's one of the coolest Clarion tools around.) It's a great interview, don't miss it. (Great photo of his "server farm", too!) Read more about it INN Bio: James Fortune 14-Mar-2002 -- Susan Pichotta This week's INN Bio is the first featuring a British Clarionite, and another in our continuing series of presenters and others involved in the upcoming ETC conference.
A magician, director, producer and writer, he has a rich and interesting resume in the show business world. In the Clarion world, we know him as a Brit with a rather noticeable sense of humor, and he's also the official Clarion trainer for England. In his bio, he mentions being slapped in the face with a fish and OOP in the same sentence... Read more about it INN Bio: John Dunn 6-Mar-2002 -- Susan Pichotta An artist and a programmer, John has been using Clarion since Version 1.0. He mentions some of his
experiences along the way, and offers an in-depth comparison of programming and art. He paid his board while living in
Switzerland by working as a carpenter, and is now active in his town's government in Massachusetts. He's an obviously
proud father, and enjoys beer, wine, and carrot juice. And for photos, think "H"s... Horses and Hawaii.
Read more about itINN Bio: Shawn Mason 27-Feb-2002 -- Susan Pichotta This week, the Icetips News Network is pleased to present the second in our series featuring speakers from the upcoming Eastern Tennessee Clarion Conference.
Unlike the other speakers, this guy will be on home turf: he lives in Tennessee. But when it comes to telling us about his presentation, he's a man of fewer words (saving it all for the conference, no doubt!), but he makes up for it by having quite an interesting collection of hobbies. He also talks about learning the difficult lesson of "sometimes the best thing to do is nothing". Read more about it INN Bio: Arie Rens 20-Feb-2002 -- Susan Pichotta He's used Clarion to write software for the European Space Agency. His company recently won a Dutch software
competition (see the thread titled "Clarion wins in Dutch RADrace" in the softvelocity. products.c55ee newsgroup).
He's a Clarion Distributor. And he's worked as a farmhand, growing... tulips, among other things. Don't miss this week's bio
about another interesting Clarionite, with more great pictures. :)
Read more about it INN Bio: Maurice Pilotte 13-Feb-2002 -- Susan Pichotta If you like covered bridges, you will enjoy this week's INN Bio interview. If you're not familiar with covered bridges, you get a
chance to see some great examples. Oh, yeah, and we also talk about Clarion... This week's interviewee hails from the "New England" area of the United States. He talks about OOP and the ACCEPT statement, and a really cool calendar he's written. And we get to hear about those beautiful old bridges, too. :) Read more about it INN Bio: Mihai Palade 30-Jan-2002 -- Susan Pichotta This week presents another first for the INN Bios -- the first interview with a Clarion programmer from Romania!
A recent software engineering
graduate, he's now studying for his Master's in Measurement Systems at the "Politehnica"
University of Bucharest. But at his day job, he works with Clarion.
Read about the surprising (to some) way he was introduced to Clarion, and see a little of
his corner of the world.
Read more about it INN Bio: Russ Eggen 23-Jan-2002 -- Susan Pichotta This week's INN Bio debuts a new series! From now until the ETC conference, we'll occasionally feature speakers and other people who
will be instrumental in making ETC a success.
We're pleased to kick off this series with one of the most well-known people in
the Clarion world. An accomplished teacher and active participant on the newsgroups, who
knew he wrote science fiction? Some photos of his visit to England, too, and as usual,
I put my favorite at the very end.
Read more about it Happy Birthday 23-Jan-2002 -- Arnór Baldvinsson Today is Sue's birthday and this time it ends with a zero! She doesn't know I put this up here (yet;) but I know it would make my beloved wife very happy if she receive an email or two today from her fans out there!
INN Bio: Dennis Evans 16-Jan-2002 -- Susan Pichotta This week, we're pleased to present a bio of one of San Antonio's newest residents
(which we didn't know about when we asked him for an interview;).A Clarion programmer of some experience, he also likes tanks (the armored kind), and has some experience with them, too. Read about that and more, including his astute observation of problem-solvers. Read more about it INN Bio: Juan Domingo Herrera 9-Jan-2002 -- Susan Pichotta This week's INN Bio is our very first one from South America. Featuring a nice guy, he's not
the loudest one on the newsgroups, but he's there, helping where he can. An avid programmer
and devoted family man, he also has a passion for photos of his country -- he sent too many
to include in the body of the article, but they were all wonderful, so be sure and check out the
thumbnails at the end of the interview. Read more about it INN Bio: Kevin Erskine 3-Jan-2002 -- Susan Pichotta In our first biography of the new year, the Icetips News Network is pleased to present
an interview with Kevin Erskine. Kevin has been a Clarionite for quite awhile, was once
a third-party developer, and is still active on the technical newsgroups. Find out what he likes
best about being a consultant and see some great photos of northern California and beautiful
examples of his handiwork.
