There have been some problems reported with using Clarion on the new Windows XP operating system. SoftVelocity has released a alpha build of Clarion 5.507 (5.5G) to fix this.

SoftVelocity has released a alpha build of Clarion 5.507 (5.5G) to fix this. SoftVelocity is also providing a new linker for Clarion 5 to make it compatible with Windows XP. Email support@softvelocity.com to participate in testing the Clarion 5 linker.

I have been using Clarion 4B and Clarion 5.5E on a XP-Home machine for the past two weeks and have not found any particular problems with it. I run C5.5E in it's own memory space but not Clarion 4.

Infoworld reports that Microsoft apparently changed some MDAC (Microsoft Data Access Components) in Windows XP resulting in a significant change in how SQL Server connections are established. Read the article

Eric Ortega reported on the softvelocity.c55 newsgroup:

I've been experementing about some other solution on compile and exit thing on cw5 and xp, as I suspected it has something to do with the new XP visual theme. Now he I am using CW5 and CW5.5 without any compatibility setting and no run on separate memory space but still running rock solid on xp.

Solution:
Download Style XP from www.tgtsoft.com
Install StyleXP and it will patch some windows xp file
Try running your cw with or without those compatibility mode

Works for me, might also work for you. It is a beta software but it helps.

3 days later... After 3 days test using both CW5B and CW5.5G on XP Pro, no more compile time and execution exit. Thanks to StyleXP and Cacheman. :-)

After I set Clarion 5.5E to run in it't own memory space, I have had no problems with it under XP. I have had no problems with programs compiled in Clarion 4 and Clarion 5.5 and have not had to set them to run in separate memory space at all.

If anyone is interested here are some settings etc. that I have on my PC that might help

I use the windows classic themes and appearance.

I also use the windows classic start menu.

To change the compatibility setting and set Clarion 5.5 to run in it's own memory space, go to the properties for the shortcut.

To set it to run in it's own memory space, click the [Advanced] button and check the "Run in separate memory space"

To change the compatibility settings, select the Compatibility tab and set the compatibility to whatever you want to.

It seems that most XP/Clarion combinations work fine, but some have problems and it seems that these problems may be related to certain hardware/sofware combinations.
